How Long Does Technology Actually Last?
One of the biggest issues in the industry is how long technology actually lasts. A common misconception is that computer hardware has a lifespan of 4-6 years. In reality, problems often start appearing as early as year two, and the need for repairs follows soon after.
Computer problems can stem from a number of factors
One of the most common is overheating, usually caused by poor ventilation, dust buildup, and inefficient cooling.
The fix is regular dust cleaning — and making sure there's enough space around the computer for air to circulate freely.
Another frequent issue is the power supply. Using a low-quality or undersized power supply causes voltage fluctuations, which can damage the computer's components over time.
Hardware problems can also stem from prolonged use of low-quality components. Wear happens faster in that case, and continuing to push already-worn hardware can lead to a sudden, complete failure — creating unnecessary stress for your business.
And we can't overlook software problems either
Viruses, outdated drivers, and poorly configured software can all be addressed through consistent operating system maintenance and updates, along with reliable antivirus software and process optimization.
Sometimes, though, even if you've taken care of all of this, technology simply becomes outdated. As technology evolves, incompatibilities appear between new and old software.
For that reason, we recommend planning regular upgrades of key components in your computers (RAM, SSD, graphics card, etc.).
Where possible, use a lighter operating system such as Linux on your older computers, if the software you rely on allows it.
Don't neglect preventive maintenance. A lack of regular upkeep creates the conditions for hardware-related crises down the line.
Clean and test your computer periodically. Don't forget to back up important data and keep your drives optimized.
How do you know if your computer has a problem?
If your computer starts showing frequent crashes and slowdowns, that can be a sign it's time to repair or replace a specific component. Catching a problem early and acting on it quickly can significantly extend your computer's lifespan.
